Cross-value chain services

Smallholder farmers and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are often unable to access cross-value chain services, such as digital logistics and finance platforms. Poor internet access and infrastructure are key barriers. Understanding how these emerging digital services can be made more accessible to smallholders and SMEs is key for making food value chains more inclusive, resilient and equitable.

The CGIAR ‘Rethinking Food Markets’ Research Initiative explores the impact of emerging digital service innovations for smallholders and SMEs in Bangladesh, Uganda and Nigeria. The focus is on bundled innovations that can improve:

  1. Logistics services, such as supply chain management, transportation, traceability, digital platforms for e-commerce, and cold storage
  2. Value-chain digital financial services that facilitate transactions, savings, access to and use of credit, and insurance
